I do not think Elinor really has much of an affect on the children; she does keep herself clear of the action. I agree that the children want attention but they are still acting too wild, children are routinely taught that it is not acceptable to pinch others or throw their hankies out the window and have fun anyway. I think Anne and Lucy were just following Lady Middleton’s lead in treating Annamaria when she is throwing a tantrum—I only mention them because they are doing just what LM wants, this is just part of their ingratiating themselves with her—I do not blame them for not controlling the children or not knowing how to calm Annamaria but their blind mimicking of LM does not help the situation. It is not their job nor is it Elinor’s to quiet LM’s children and I am unsure why you would place that burden on Elinor rather than LM or even Sir John. I really do not see the problem with Elinor in this situation, being around misbehaving children takes all the fun out of being around children so I cannot find fault in her for sitting quietly and watching the chaos; I would say it is rather inelegant of LM to subject her guests to such behavior—I think it is a crack in the armor of her good breading. Badly done LM I say! ;D
