refer to different products of lavender...

eg lavender water seems to have been applied to wounds and foreheads etc and also inhaled for relaxation. It sounds like lavender drops were taken orally and I think this would be the lavender oil, which is much stronger and would act as a sedative (not recommended now I believe).

"Some lavender drops, however, which she was at length persuaded to take, were of use; and from that time till Mrs. Jennings returned, she continued on the bed quiet and motionless."
