Elinor, on the other hand, gives Lucy the benefit of the doubt for having been much less artful at first.

Ch23> the four succeeding years ..., spent on her side in inferior society and more frivolous pursuits, had perhaps robbed her of that simplicity, which might once have given an interesting character to her beauty.

Perhaps Lucy's increase in art[fulness] took the place of the other improvements of mind that she now lacks?
