Rather than Willoughby being ideal because, among other things he has Combe as well as Allenham to look forward to, Marianne considers 2,000 pounds a competance because that is the sort of income she will have with Willoughby.
I read in one of the introductions to S&S (but can't remember which sorry!) that this passage was significant because both Marianne and Elinor described their competance as what income they can expect in marrying the person they love - Edward too will be looking at the few hundred pounds Elinor implies is her competance.
