... that Elinor is thinking that he got it from a maid at Norland. To make it even easier, I think that a maid, when dressing a lady's hair, could well have snipped off bits of hair to make curls work better (without the need to wait for the hair dresser).

One wouldn't have needed a great deal to creat a plait like the one in the picture Mandy posted.
