.. in the novel text to see what is actually said - the passage that came to my mind was from S&S1!

I think the explanation that they come up with - or Marianne does, is valid though. She suggests that when they were still at Norland and they had a hairdresser come round (JA talks about something similar in her letters when staying with her brother, Edward) he must have bribed a maid to get him a lock of Elinor's hair that was being cut off.
