...strips of paper rolled up and then pressed into shapes. I think they would then be applied to the box, or whatever was being made - not sure how, although I suppose they must have had some sort of glue.

There's a very good picture of a filigree box in Deidre Le Faye's: Jane Austen: The World of Her Novels - I have to say it's a very good book all round.

I've linked the book below (the second review is mine btw! specifically mentioning the filigree!)

I'll have to have a look at home later ;-)

Maybe someone else has this book and can scan the picture to post?
