This teasing joking Edward is very unlike the person one forms an image of, when based on the previous chapters.

You're right, it contradicts. We should be expecting a very witty person if this is Edward out of spirits. I can't think of a reason for this contradiction. Maybe generally speaking he is out of spirits, but he has perked up for the conversation.
