' Beauty with utility '   Written by Mandy N (10/2/2006 12:31 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I hadn't thought of that before...., penned by Jan
Are you new?

This phrase of Edward's set off the thought he does understand the picturesque but appreciates the same landscape as Marieanne, yet with different ideas.
I think in this scene Edward shows he is not without engaging charecteristics - being well-informed, with a lively imagination, and a sense of the absurd.
I agree with Robbin he's quite charming.

Thankyou for the quote from Gilpin. I had read it but my understanding of picturesque theory is imperfect- not as good Edward Ferras.
Actually, the pictures on your site 'Jane Austen in Devon' such as the C21st photo of hills for running and watercolor of Creedy Valley appear suitably picturesque to me. :)

I haven't heard of 'snug' as a defining feature of the picturesque. If the 'snug' farmhouse or cottage has honeysuckle covered walls or is near twisty trees, 'snug' may've been accepted as an illustrative element of the picturesque.
It may depend on the composition of the artist. ;)

Thanks everyone for reading my post.
