I don't think that JA meant that there's anything wrong with being reserved, especially given Elinor's reserved behavior.

IMHO, the passage points out that Edward is feeling guilty about Lucy and/or Elinor, and he is the one who is interpreting "reserved" to mean "having something to hide." It's a big clue that there's something else going on to affect his spirits, besides his mother's behavior.
