aback because reserve can also apply to not being 'open' - in other words though not really hiding something, a reserved person keeps things to himself or herself.

Edward feels surprised that they should think him 'reserved' rather than shy, meaning he keeps things to himself.

Calling someone 'Reserve' can sound like an accusation, but calling someone 'shy' is almost like being sympathetic.
