Oh, definitely he understands the 'picturesque', and is teasing Marianne. These passages give a clue to how Edward might be if his cares were lessened and he felt free to be his own man, don't you think? These are the words of a clever, well read and thoughtful man, with a sense of humour.

It is interesting how even when he is appearing so down, he is able to have this sort of light bantering relationship with Marianne.
