why indeed is Willoughby silent?

Never noticed that before.
Here is some juicy bit of gossip which he could turn and twist as much as he wanted - but he doesn't.
His sentimentality about the cottage and 'you and yours' is rather uncharacteristic of him.

I agree that Tom has a good explanation for the former bit, about keeping quiet, but this change in his general behaviour is mysterious indeed :)
