Interesting pattern!   Written by Tom P2 (9/29/2006 7:39 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Willoughby’s Silence—what’s up? (long) ;D, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Thanks for pointing that out, Robbin! I've been completely neglecting to look for patterns among things that don't happen but could be expected to. And there's definitely enough tongue-holding on Willoughby's part, to count as a pattern.

Could it be adequately explained by a cowardly streak in his character? He saves his broad disparagements of Colonel Brandon for an audience who's (a) more likely to agree, and (b) less likely to parrot his words back to the Colonel.

FWIW both adaptations put the “party of pleasure” remark out of earshot of the Middletons and Mrs Jennings.
