Other Queen Mab's   Written by teri-mc (9/28/2006 12:54 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Queen Mab, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

Ben Johnson in 1603 told the tale to James I's wife, later published in Entertainment at Althorpe.

in 1627 an Michael Drayton's poem Nymphadia told about Queen Mab's court from an attendent's perspective.

Shelly's poem published in 1813 was a bit too late for JA to use in S&S.

There is some speculation that Mab is associated with the Irish fairy Mabd, however it is disputed because Madb is pronounced Meve. However, I'm straying far from the topic.

If JA read Johnson, she could also be using the allusion to Queen Mab robbing the dairy and ruining the churning (butter). Perhaps there is also an allusion to spoiling/ruining Marianne?
