In all, it just seemed that all of it, the horse being too expensive for Marianne to keep, fits in with the dreamy, unrealistic mood they are both in, in love with love. And as you rightly say, if he bred the horse to carry "a woman", that does not necessarily mean Marianne. I agree, sounds a bit haphazard;-0
