Nabobs, gold mohrs, palanquins :)   Written by Reeba (9/27/2006 3:46 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Willoughby's remarks...., penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

Nabobs are actually 'nawabs' who were titled landowners like the Lords/dukes etc. in England.

The most famous one in recent times being the famous cricketer 'Nawab of Pataudi'.

They had 'coins' called gold mohars at that time, which were used to pay for things. They were of real gold.

Palanquin was a mode of transportation, like the 'chairs'.

I am not so sure whether Willoughby is talking about amassing wealth as such , but rather talking about a life of revelry and luxury due to his association with the 'nawabs'.

He is undermining Brandon's 'service' here I think. Sort of making him look less like a hero, and more like a 'waster'.

Interesting post, Mandy :)
