One of the essays in the Norton Critical edition does argue that neither Colonel Brandon or Edward Ferrars is described as particularly handsome in the text, and that the casting of Rickman and Grant skews the audience's response to them and loses some of the subtlety.

But I think we can cope with that, don't you ;-)
