It must really eat at Willoughby, with only £600 or £700 a year and seen to be living well beyond his means, to see a man with triple or more his income and apparently no pressing need to spend it all. Even Willoughby can probably see that the colonel is a more eligible match for Marianne in financial/security terms. No wonder he puts him down all the time!
