Oooooh, he really would be a rotter, wouldn't he, if that was the case. I do not think we are supposed to think so badly of him, yet! But it does make you wonder.

In terms of the broader issue of Brandon and money, I do not think it matters whether he has or hasn't made money in the East Indies - Willoughby thinks he has, that he is rich and that he is not willing to spend it on the things Willoughby would spend it on. He damns him for all that, regardless of the truth.

I find it very hard not to be suspicious of Willoughby from the start now, and so to notice the really quite appalling things he says about the Colonel.
