Marianne's literary taste polarised in adaptations   Written by Tom P2 (9/25/2006 11:54 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Admiring Pope 'no more than is proper', penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I didn't know who wrote Abelard and Eloise, but it rings true that S&S2's Marianne should be familiar with Pope.

In the novel, she's into Cowper and at least some Shakespeare (Hamlet, mentioned in ch 16), and comes across as a right fruitcake when she apostrophises the trees at Norland.

In S&S1 she wallows deeper in the romantic: Cowper and gothic novels, but no Shakespeare (yet).

In S&S2 she's quite high-brow, with an increased emphasis on Shakespeare, and (I'm pleased to learn) a reference to Pope.
