I don't really blame her, at this point, for not seeing him as a potential marriage partner when he is silent and grave and unarguably much older than her.

However, even if she had no idea that he was falling in love with her, it is so foolish of her not to realize his worth just as a human being--an interesting, intelligent man with taste, good manners, and interesting or possibly romantic events in his past.
