Are you new?

Marianne tells Elinor that he has to bring the mare over from his estate in Sommersetshire for her. He also offers it to her after he makes the comment about Brandon refusing to buy the brown mare.

That left me with the impression that he had the brown mare with him, if he was trying to sell it to the colonel--but maybe not. Maybe he needs to unload some of his horses from his estate due to the expense of keeping them, and when he can't sell this one, tries to give her away?

I never made that connection before either, but you are right that it seriously puts a pall on the romance of the gift if this is true!
