it is not unrealistic to suggest that Col. Brandon could have made his fortune in India. He was a second son with no expectations of inheriting the estate and would have had to find a profession. Willoughby is pretty abhorrent in his scorn for Col. Brandon and jealousy does seem to be his prime motivator.
