and I think TraceyW does as well. I originally thought that there was authorial sneering at Lady M's motivations. But I understand Tracey W to be suggesting (and I like this idea) that Lady M is a mirror to Marianne's way of behaving - and that this episode shows that even where politeness is mere form and not born of sympathy, it has its positive side. Some interesting thoughts.
