I like the way you read that para - I was reading it more negatively in terms of Lady M not being sensitive to Elinor, even if she inadvertently saved her feelings. If we put it in the wider context, as you have, it is a less personal and more interesting understanding of Lady M's way of conducting herself. Thanks, I shall keep looking at how Lady M fits in.
