My understanding is married women typically wore caps.
And I thought along similar lines yet with a slight difference.

I thought young, unmarried women also wore light, lacy caps indoors and by 'setting your cap ' a young woman- like Marieanne- would show favouritism to an admirer by wearing her most becoming cap.

This maybe an over literal interpretation; but it's a phrase Marieanne finds most odious. ;)
