Oh! And an addition from my notes!   Written by Barbara (9/23/2006 4:21 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, 'Brandon is quite smitten', penned by Barbara

Are you new?

In the novel, we have nothing like the 'gun cleaning' scene from S&S2 where Sir John tries to encourage Brandon about his feelings for Marianne.

I love the scene in the movie, but I can never decide if that's really the kind of thing our Sir John in the book would do and say. I can't picture him wanting to talk about his friend's 'feelings'--what do others think?

On the other hand, it does ring true to me that Brandon would seem very down about it and make self-deprecating remarks such as 'All the better for her,' or at the very least not want to discuss it with anyone--even his best friend.
