Marianne's preserver - enter Willoughby! Lovely passage.   Written by Reeba (9/23/2006 10:57 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Wow, probably, penned by JeannetteF
Are you new?

Isn't Margaret's description of Willoughby a page out of Marianne's own book?

From the beginning of chapter 10 to the end of his first visit, and followed by Elinor's comment, JA seems all 'tongue in cheek' here.

First we have the dramatic rescuing of Marianne - this *hero meets heroine* is no tame, boring, dull, day to day meeting of two people.

Then JA gushes over Willoughby's looks - expression after expression, line after line.

Later she gets even more 'tongue in cheek' and I love this part ;)

-of music and dancing he was passionately fond,

-They speedily discovered[LOL] that their enjoyment of dancing and music was mutual,
- it arose from a general conformity of judgment in all that related to either.
Following is the best
she proceeded to question him on the subject of books; her favourite authors were brought forward and dwelt upon with so rapturous a delight, that any young man of five-and-twenty must have been insensible indeed, not to become an immediate convert to the excellence of such works, however disregarded before.

-Their taste was strikingly alike. The same books, the same passages were idolized by each
- if any difference appeared, any objection arose,it lasted no longer than till the force of her arguments and the brightness of her eyes could be displayed.

- He acquiesced in all her decisions, caught all her enthusiasm, and long before his visit concluded, they conversed with the familiarity of a long-established acquaintance.

This passage is wonderful. It gives so many impressions.
That Willoughby is so well read, and fond of music etc.

But when read again one gets the impression that he is just saying *what Marianne wants to hear*.
If this is 'charm' then it's so obvious.

He should better have remained grave and silent ;)

What Elinor says after his visit is hilarious, but the post is getting so long that I have to cut short what would have been a longer gem of a passage :)
