Are you new?

I really like your reading of that passage about the children, Reeba! I don't know a lot about the role of governesses and nurserymaids with children that young, but I'm sure that it ranged from having almost complete charge of the children in a separate wing of the home and only coming out for that obligatory viewing after dinner, to parents taking a much greater role in hands-on childrearing. From this description about how comfortable the children were with their mother, I think that you're right in saying that she sees them regularly, and she clearly thinks about them a great deal even when they're not there.
