Today, there is a greater age difference between couples married for the second time than couples marrying for the first. Part of this reflects the smaller pool of potential partners, as has been already mentioned here. But I wonder whether the greater acceptance of a large age difference could be the result of men remarrying after their first wife died young. If she died without children, then he would have to marry again. Even if they had children, he might be more interested in a young woman who's never been married than in an older widow more his own age. In fact, we see exactly this circumstance with the Dashwoods. So it's possible that an older single man who's looking for a young wife could have been married earlier in his life.
