Thank you very much for your messages below. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the images of my beloved Devon - I can assure you that it's a pleasure to share these things with people who also appreciate them.

I have added some pages to the site about the Barton area.

Did Jane ever visit this valley? Despite holidaying in Devon at least twice, we have very little evidence from that period of what she did or where she went so she may well have! There were a few guide books she might have read and she had met quite a few people from Devon prior to writing the novel but most significantly, she spent 5 years under the same roof as Richard Buller, a pupil of her father. Richard was the son of the Bishop of Exeter and he later had a curacy just a few villages away from the 'Barton' area.
