when Marianne heard about the colonel's age.

I can't imagine that his age was discussed right at the beginning of their introduction.

So did Marianne imagine him to be 'old' before knowing his age or did he 'look' old?

Then there is the mother;
"Mrs. Dashwood, who could not think a man five years younger than herself so exceedingly ancient as he appeared to the youthful fancy of her daughter,..."

I wonder if JA is showing us a contrast in attitudes due to age,
one younger, and the other older, but having similar sensibilities.
Both reacting *warmly* to what they think, while Elinor *listens*.
