Are you new?

We don't know this, of course, but it might have been an issue if, for example, the late Mr. Jennings had been an older son and been required by the terms of his own inheritance to leave the money to a brother's son or grandson or a cousin, etc.

However, then Jennings and the Ferrars, despite their wealth, don't seem to have a family estate anywhere (only houses in town) and so perhaps that is the main issue right there. If it is only money to control, there is not nearly so much at stake as a family estate that has been long settld for many generations.
