I was surprised   Written by Lynn (9/21/2006 9:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Some musings on age differences., penned by Barbara
Are you new?

when I was reading this time at the age difference between Sir John and Lady Middleton. I had always pictured Lady Middleton as older than her late 20s.

Perhaps the age difference is not so much a function of whether the husband should guide the wife, etc as of a man wanting a younger wife in order to have children? Despite evidence to the contrary, wasn't there a bit of a belief that a woman in her late 20s was too old to have children? Or at least too old to be having a first child? Just a guess on my part.

Another guess is that there was more of a pervading belief that men must sow their wild oats before marrying, hence an older age when they first marry?
