Are you new?

Might it be that Marianne thinks that Elinor has not announced an understanding with Edward because they are still mourning their father's death, and thus such announcements could not yet be made publicly? This is pure speculation on my part -- I really don't know the protocol here -- but it seems to me a plausible explanation why Marianne might think proper Elinor would keep silent about an implicit, if not yet explicit, engagement.
