I think we are supposed to see a lack, even though they are happily matched.

There is an impression of resources wasted.

Developing one's mind for its own sake seems to have been an important factor in JA's view of the world. I've made a post on Austenations about this as it requires more extensive quoting from other of JA's novels than I think Myretta would approve. Link below.

Of course you may think differently on this topic from JA, I am just talking about what I think JA believed.
