Indeed the word 'employment' could be as personal as 'taste'. One which is not declared by society as the proper thing.

I also wonder about the word 'cold'.
I feel JA does not really mean 'unfeeling' in negative terms. I think she means 'not interested'.

'Cold' can also give an impression of 'deliberate unkindness or negativity', of which I haven't yet seen any example.

All I have seen is an unresposive, and disinterested person.
