The cost of keeping a carraige   Written by JulieW (9/20/2006 11:15 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The cost of hiring a post chaise & post horses, penned by Maisy
Are you new?

was given by John Trusler in his book The Way to be Rich and Respectable, addressed to men of small fortune (1796)and which was probably on Elinor's reading list!

He thought that a carraige cost £160 per annum to keep and run.

This ammount would have been about 30 per cent of the Dashwood ladies' income.

In one of his other booksThe Economist(1774) Trusler estimated that an income of at least £800 per year was required in order to be able to keep a carriage.

This is bourne out by JA's own experience, as her father gave up his attempts to keep a carriage on an income of £700.
