One tends to desire what the other one lacks   Written by Jen K (9/19/2006 10:24 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Colonel Brandon as Sir John's 'particular friend'., penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I think that in any great friendship (I hesitate to mention Darcy and Bingley, only to be sent off to Austenuations) an outgoing personality tends to be happy with a quieter one. They seek to meet the mind that makes them whole.

Although I have to say with Colonel Brandon, it is only fair to mention (although this might be a tiny bit of a spoiler) that he has good reason to be silent and grave at the moment. Naturally, he is most likely to be much more in favor of music, society, and whatever else have you. Only we who know can suspect the reasons for this temporary downtroddenness.

Which makes me wonder if JA expected us to read the book several times?
