I found something..   Written by Jan (9/19/2006 11:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I think it has been accepted, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

In some notes I made from The Rise of Devon's Seaside Towns by Travis he talks about the cost of living generally in Devon c1800 being cheaper than in the southeast of England (where Sussex is for those who can't place it).

Also in several books I have about Devon, it says that visitors often remarked on how cheap the food was in Exeter (C18th).

So it does look very likely that Mrs Dashwood will find her £500 goes further than it might have in Sussex and I am satisfied :-)
