And to be beholden to kind relatives like Sir John,when once you were mistress of a great estate.....not pleasant.No carriage, no horses, three girlsl ot bring up ( in AMrgaerets case educated) and hopefully marry off...not a leasnat propsect at all.

I agree,Jan I think Mrs Dashwood's general attitude, when faced with two major life events( loss of husband ,loss of home wiht attatched loss of status)is in the main adnmirable.That she maintains some semblance of hope says a lot for her character.
