Cowper and sensibility.   Written by Mandy N (9/18/2006 11:49 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Another wonderful gem of a passage in CH 5..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

A constant theme of Cowper's poetry was human isolation and helplesssness against nature.
He was a favourite poet of Jane Austen as he is here of Marieanne. I'm sure JA had nothing against the appreciation of poety.
Yet I agree with people on this thread JA was parodying Marieannne's excesses of sensibility.

In my view, a powem such as 'Yardly Oak' should be read quietly to allow the thoughts of the poet to speak for themselves.

My reading of William Cowper would hardly drive anyone into estacies of emotion !

I'd be as flat as wallpaper. ;)

* So I may deserve a SUTH for my dreadful lack of 'taste' ;0
