I too, think Sir John Middleton is to some degree supposed to represent and point out all of John Dashwood's deficiencies. Here is a perfect opportunity to help his step-mother and half-sisters, and he completely blows it! I agree that the basket Sir John sends is a deliberate reference to JD's broken resolution. And this time I do not think he can blame it on Fanny!

Isn't JA brilliant? ;-) Every little piece fits! So clever! (As if you guys don't know -- that's why we're all here!)
