I think that what John is doing there, in speaking so frequently and insistently about demands on his purse, is convincing himself and his mother and sisters that he really is doing all he can and that no one should expect him to do more. His repressed conscience is coming out. This way he doesn't have to make up blatant excuses, he's making by-the-way excuses.
