The Servants   Written by Deborah d'Bajor (9/18/2006 11:51 a.m.)
Are you new?

It's already been discussed below that having three servants wasn't really the luxury it might sound to us!

JA tells us they have 2 maids and a man and the man and one maid are sent off to get Barton Cottage ready ahead of the departure of the Dashwood ladies.

I was wondering if it would have been ususal to do what they seem to be doing here and either sourcing servants locally (to Norland!) or taking some of their own former household?

With FD as the new Mistress I bet the servants would have been queueing up.... I think it's only in S&S1 that FD talks about making a clean sweep of servants, but that would be sooo like her!

What sort of a position would these servants have occupied? Presumably they are not grand enough to have a butler? The women are both called maids, but I suppose they would have been quite general in their duties, having to clean the house, do the washing, cook and perhaps attend on the Dashwood ladies when required?

Yes Julie - of course I'm keeping count!
Fanny Dashwood is currently ahead - no surprises there then!
