Since it's so hard to make the actual money translate, I like to see it as a reduction in income of 80%--now they had apparently been quite rich, but if you think of it as, say, going from an income of £100,000 p.a. to £12,500 p.a., it's a huge difference, and it's no wonder Elinor was concerned about her mother's ability to make ends meet.
