Elinor's wish to get away from Norland   Written by Barbara (9/18/2006 1:59 a.m.)
Are you new?

This struck me on this read--and I never really noticed this line before. At the end of Ch. 4, as they are making arrangements to accept Barton Cottage, we read:

"Elinor had always thought it would be more prudent for them to settle at some distance from Norland than immediately amongst their present acquaintance."

But we also learn that this move to Devonshire is "a removal from the vicinity of Norland beyond her wishes".

This leaves me to wonder exactly what Elinor wanted in terms of distance away from Norland and what it was that she thought imprudent about staying there. Any thoughts?
