Whenever I think that it must not have been so bad to live in a cottage in a beautiful part of the world with 3 servants, I also try to keep in mind that these ladies used to be living on an income of £4000 a year, and to now be forced to live on an eighth of that is quite a come down in the world, however you look at it.

I can't imagine how my family would survive if our income was suddenly reduced by more than 80% and we had no possibility of doing anything at all to fix or alter that.
