Marianne is contradicting herself...   Written by Pennie (9/18/2006 12:27 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Taste: the good, the bad and the natural?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

... but not so much in her talk of natural vs cultivated taste, but in her discussions of Edward. In the beginning she is dismissive in her opinions of Edward, but she says that 'when' he becomes her brother, she will love him. By the end of the conversation she is convinced that Edward has the capability for taste.

The whole conversation speaks to me of one where Marianne is trying to be convinced to love Edward so that she can be happy for Elinor. However she is trying to love him on her terms, by asking Elinor about his taste, and not considering what Elinor may find important in a husband.
